Is Cannabis legal in Madrid?

The legalization of cannabis in Madrid is a hotly debated issue. Currently, the use and possession of cannabis is still illegal under Spanish law. However, in recent years, the city of Madrid has taken steps to decriminalize the use and possession of small amounts of cannabis for personal use. In 2015, Madrid implemented a policy of issuing fines for the possession of up to 40 grams of cannabis, instead of criminal prosecution. This policy has been a success, resulting in a decrease of arrests and convictions for cannabis-related offenses.

In 2017, the city of Madrid also implemented a policy allowing cannabis clubs to operate in the city. These clubs, which are private and not-for-profit, provide a space for members to consume cannabis in a safe and legal environment. The clubs are also allowed to grow and cultivate their own cannabis, which is then sold to members.

Despite these advances, cannabis is still illegal in Madrid and the possession and use of any amount of cannabis is still subject to prosecution. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the current laws and regulations surrounding cannabis in Madrid.
